Vascular endothelial growth factor +936 C/T gene polymorphism and glioma risk in a Chinese Han population

Background: Angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor progression. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important regulator of angiogenesis. Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between VEGF +936 C/T gene polymorphism and glioma risk in a Chinese Han population. Methods: We extracted the peripheral blood samples in 160 glioma patients and 320 controls. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: Glioma patients had a significantly higher frequency of TT genotype (odds ratio [OR]=3.75, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.24, 11.40; p=0.02) than controls. Glioblastoma patients had a significantly higher frequency of TT genotype (OR=3.05, 95% CI=1.11, 8.37; p=0.03) than other gliomas. Patients with grade IV glioma had a significantly higher frequency of TT genotype (OR=3.12, 95% CI=1.14, 8.58; p=0.03) than low-grade glioma. Conclusion: Our study indicated that VEGF+936 C/T genotype was associated with a higher glioma risk in a Chinese Han population.
