N2 - This paper tests the influence of technology sourcing and appropriability regimes on new product development, using data from a survey of 254 Chinese firms. Our results demonstrate that both internal technology development and external technology sourcing can improve a firm's new product development. Furthermore, although both legal appropriability regimes and strategic appropriability regimes have positive relationships with new product development, their moderating effects are different. Specifically, it is suggested that firms incorporate legal appropriability regimes when using external technology development and strategic appropriability regimes when using internal technology sources, to improve new product development.
