Review on microgrid technology and international standards

Standardization is the vital step towards the continuous development of microgrids, and in recent years international electrotechnical commission (IEC) has established special working group to investigate the standardization of microgrids. As conveners of IEC working group (WG) on microgrids, we first review the latest development trends and standardization surrounding microgrids, then discuss contents of IEC microgrid standards, giving guideline for microgrid planning and evaluation as well as technical requirements for microgrid operation and control. The goals of IEC microgrid WG are to provide technical guidelines that are internationally recognized and to improve the active roles microgrids played in different applications. In conclusion, the positive influence of standardization on microgrid industry is also summarized.
