N2 - Modern product design is market-oriented, function-driven and new knowledge-based. As applied widely in all kinds of rotating machinery, however, hydrodynamic journal bearings are not designed easily for most design and manufacturing engineers since this is an area that requires abundant specialist knowledge and experience. After seeing about the related researches, a design schema based on case-based reasoning (CBR), which supports the automation of conceptual design for hydrodynamic journal bearing named CBRBDS, is proposed in this paper. As a pivotal problem that challenges the application of the CBRBDS, case representation is described in detail by employing an object-oriented methodology. In addition, with a view to integrate design information into different design environments at some stages, a neutral format for information representation that includes the representation of EXPRESS-G and its corresponding description of EXPRESS language is, hence, exercised by using STEP/EXPRESS modeling tool. This work introduced here aims to lay the foundations of the automation of conceptual design for hydrodynamic journal bearing.
