N2 - In this letter, a novel design approach to realize a wideband slot antenna with stable bidirectional radiation characteristic is presented based on the advanced aperture-related sub-structure characteristic modes (CMs). Specifically, the CMs of the slot antenna with a finite-size ground plane and substrate are analyzed, thereby accurately revealing antenna's resonance and radiation properties, which in turn provide guidance for structural modification. As a result, the proposed 1-mm and 5-mm slot antennas exhibit 10-dB impedance bandwidths of 31.3% and 58.7%, respectively, with stable bidirectional radiation maintained across the band.
