摘要

The explicit finite element method (FEM) is an important tool for biomechanical investigation of artificial joints. In this chapter, the basic concepts and approaches of explicit FEM are introduced. The comparison between implicit finite element analysis (FEA) and explicit FEA is listed. In particular, several explicit FEA models of total hip and knee implants are described. The key factors related to modelling efficiency and accuracy are discussed. We also discuss the major challenges and provide future research opportunities in the explicit FE modelling of artificial joints.
