Abstract
The harmonic characteristics of a rectifier with a DC filter inductor or capacitor are analyzed and then relevantly they are classified into current type and voltage type harmonic source. The reason why the shunt and the series active power filters are respectively suitable to compensate for the current type and voltage type harmonic source is illustrated. A new control approach for detecting load voltage is developed. It can directly obtain the load voltage harmonic component to provide the reference voltage for the series APF and improve its compensation performance. The experiment results of a complete prototype of the series APF, are presented to show its validity for compensating the voltage type harmonic source. The new control approach for detecting load voltage is compared with the traditional one.
