Abstract

The WIMS-AECL / DRAGON / RFSP reactor physics code set was used to simulate a power derating transient that occurred in a CANDU® reactor in May of 1999. The micro-depletion method, developed and implemented in the CANDU full-core analysis code RFSP, was applied in this simulation. During this period no refuelling or poison change took place, the negative reactivity worth introduced by xenon poison can be compensated by reducing the liquid zone level and moving out of the adjuster rods. The thermalhydraulic feedback is another factor that affects reactivity. This paper examined each one of the factors and concluded that xenon modelling implementation in the micro-depletion method in RFSP is consistent with that implemented in WIMS-AECL, and the micro-depletion method implemented in RFSP is validated for the simulation of a CANDU power-derating scenario.
