Abstract

In order to study the performance of gas-to-liquid (GTL) transformer oil, Shell Diala S4 ZX-I was evaluated in comparison with other three types of naphthenic and non-naphthenic oils. Their compositions and all the mandatory tests required in GB 2536-2011, along with the tests including impulse breakdown behaviors, thermal conductivity, and capacity were conducted. The composition analysis indicates that GTL transformer oil is quite different from traditional mineral oil, especially the content of alkanes. The results of type tests show that GTL transformer oil has the characteristics of lower mass fraction(<0.000 2%), lower density, higher auto-ignition point, and flash point. The lightening breakdown and thermal property tests reveal that GTL transformer oil is more resistant to impulse breakdown voltage, and has higher thermal conductivity and capacity. It is concluded that GTL transformer oil is of no corrosive sulfur risk and less substances hazardous to the environment. It can also reduce the total weight of oil-filled power transformers and other electric equipment.
