Abstract

The tribological and bio-compatible properties of Co-Cr-Mo alloy are critical for the success of orthopaedic implant. Surface texturing at the micro scale promotes the tribological behavior of element surfaces. Recently the effects of sub-micro and nanoscale topography on bio-compatibility were employed in artificial joint implant. In the paper, a rapid electrochemistry treatment was developed for generating the controlled and connected nanoscale architecture on the microscale pattern of Co-Cr-Mo surfaces. The effects of the micro-pattern superimposed nano-feature on the tribological behavior and the biocompatibility of osteoblasts are given. The results suggested that the nanoscale structures localized in the micropattem zone on Co-Cr-Mo alloy can improve the wear resistant and osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, the localized texturing is beneficial to prolonging the lifetime of orthopaedic implant.
