Abstract
This article proposes an angle-measurement based fast track initiation algorithm to overcome the existing problems in the application of traditional track initiation approaches for bearing-only target locating and tracking systems. In this algorithm, a new tracking filter association gate method is developed through analysis of the target motion characteristics in polar coordinates. As a result, the two-dimensional bearing-only measurement confirming efficiency of real targets is noticeably improved and false track overextension with dense clutter is greatly limited. Then, the target tracks with angle measurements are extended based on a logic-based approach by using these gates. This algorithm effectively improves the track initiation resolution of maneuvering targets in polar coordinates. It provides a fast and exact track initiation solution for the bearing-only tracking system using a single passive sensor. The application of the proposed approach in simulation and an engineering system proves its effectiveness and practicability.
