Abstract
The through-thickness variations of stress concentration factor (SCF) along the wall of elliptic holes in finite thickness plates have been analyzed using the finite element (FE) method. For a thick plate, the distance between the location of the maximum SCF and the free surface is invariable and independent of its thickness; it is smaller for lower elliptical shape factor. The relationships of the maximum SCF, surface SCF and the corresponding planar solution were found, and the corresponding empirical formulae were obtained by fitting the FE results. The influence of thickness on the fatigue strength was studied and a factor to describe this influence was also proposed.
