Abstract
The optical limiting (OL) properties of single nanometer size gold disk are investigated by theoretical calculation based on quasi-static approximation and Mie extinction theory. The calculated results show that the gold nanodisk possesses aspect ratio dependent OL effect. The main mechanism for OL of gold nanodisk can be attributed to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) induced optical absorption. Because the increasing aspect ratio may brings a loss of phase coherence of plasmon oscillation in gold nanodisk, so increasing the aspect ratio will widen the effective wavelength region of OL. This tuning of the OL band width in gold nanodisk may help us to optimize the monochromaticity of OL devices.
