Abstract

This paper presents the research of the air arc simulation for low voltage switching devices. Based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, we developed a timedependent three-dimensional (3-D) model for the switching arc considering Lorentz forces, Ohmic heating and radiation transport. The arc elongation, arc commutation, arc motion and arc cutting process are all included in the analysis.
