Abstract

The initiation and propagation of electrical trees at different electric field and temperature in XLPE is studied with the needle-plane electrode system. The experiments results show that the initiation time shows great dispersion when electric field is low, and the dispersion decreases with increase of field. Electrical trees initiation becomes easier when the temperature is higher, but the amount of increase is not so great. Temperature shows great influence on the propagation of electrical tree, both the speed and structure. The results also suggest that the microstructure of polymers plays an important part in electrical treeing.
