Abstract
The coupling effect of small nanocrystals and free volume on the ductility of Cu46Zr47Al7 bulk metallic glass (BMGs) alloy was studied. The BMGs used in the study with dimensions of 50× 20×h were prepared and different thickness h leads to different cooling rates upon solidification for the casting plates. The deformation features of the tensile lower surface under bending and tensile side fracture surfaces were investigated with SEM to further confirm their difference among the plastic deformation ability. The results demonstrated the effect of free volume on the ductility of BMGs by restoring free volume through quenching process, whereas the presence of small nanocrystals has played an important role to enhance the plasticity of the stated BMG so as to enhance their ductility.
