Abstract
The technical characteristics of the color alternating-current plasma display panel (AC-PDP) using a gas mixture of Ne-Xe include low firing voltage, high luminance and high luminous efficiency. However, the orange-red light emitted by excited neon atoms may seriously affect the color purity of light generated by phosphors. This problem may be solved by addition of a small amount of argon (ranging from 0.02 to 0.40 of the total pressure of the gas mixture). Various parameters of the color AC-PDP filled with Ne-Xe-Ar gas mixture, including the firing voltage, operating margin of sustaining voltage, luminance, luminous efficiency and white-field chromaticity, were studied to understand the influence of the argon addition on the performance of the AC-PDP. We found that when Ar and Xe constitute 0.05 and 0.04 of the total pressure of the mixture respectively, the overall performance of the AC-PDP can be optimized, that is, it has better white-field, appropriate firing voltage, higher luminance and luminous efficiency. The possible mechanism of the performance improvement was also tentatively discussed.
