Abstract
The authors put forward a numerical simulation approach for describing three-dimensional surfaces having non-normal distribution of asperity heights. The β function was used as the probability density of the asperity height distribution, which suits real surfaces quite well. This method provides a tool for analyzing roughness-related phenomena quantitatively in tribology. Moreover, the behaviour of squeeze film between two finite rectangular plates under partial hydrodynamic lubrication was analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The effects of roughness parameters as well as geometric parameters of the specimen on the response of the squeeze film were discussed. The experimental results for two types of surface roughness are in agreement with the theoretical ones.
