Abstract

Despite the fact that there are many investigations on martensitic transformations on Au-rich side of Au-Cd alloys, little is known on the transformation behavior of Cd-rich alloys, and the martensite structure is also unclear. In the present study we used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical resistivity and electron microscopy to study the martensitic transformation in Au-51.5at%Cd alloy. We found that the martensitic transformation of Au-51.5at%Cd alloy has a very large hysteresis (110 K) compared with that of Au-50.0at%Cd alloy (a few Kelvin). Surprisingly, electron diffraction showed that the structure of Au-51.5at%Cd has the same ζ′2 martensite structure as Au-50.0at%Cd. The large difference in hysteresis between Au-51.5at%Cd and Au-50.0at%Cd was explained in terms of the remarkable difference in point defect concentration.
