Abstract
The magnetic entropy change (MEC) of (Dy1-xGdx)Co2 compounds is investigated by measuring the magnetization as function of temperature. With the increase of Gd content, the Curie temperature increases and MEC decreases correspondingly. The type of magnetic phase transition in (Dy1-xGdx)Co2 compounds is found shifting from first order to second order as Dy is substituted by Gd, which is supposed to be the main reason for the detraction of MEC. Because of the large MEC in a wide temperature range, these compounds are expected to be the potential candidate for magnetic refrigerants.
