Abstract

This paper presents a hybrid probabilistic/deterministic method for determining the preventive control strategy to mitigate system overload. The proposed method introduces an index called normalized system overload (NSOL) index to measuring system overload level. Instead of considering all the possible failure modes and their probability, only a set of pre-defined contingencies and their probability are considered in this index. Once this index is above some threshold, a linear programming (LP)-based optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm is performed to keeping this index below its threshold. Among the possible controls, emphasis is put on generation rescheduling and load shedding. Examples are presented on a real 682 bus system.
