Abstract
Based on a modified computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, a three dimension (3D) arc model in a simplified geometry of arc quenching chamber is built and calculated by using the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory. Some phenomena such as arc shrinkage, plasma jet and arc shape are discussed. It is found that the arc column can be accelerated with the external magnetic field and the growing outlet area. However, when the outlet area is enlarged to some value, its change leads to little influence on the arc motion. The splitter plates have block effect on the flow field in the arc chamber. The experimental results prove the validity of the arc model.
