Abstract

Basic operation principle of the series active power filter is analyzed for the line current harmonic compensation of voltage harmonic source. This is different from the shunt active power filter, which is usually for the line current harmonic compensation of current harmonic source. A control approach of source current detection is introduced, which is based on the instantaneous reactive power theory. The DC side voltage control method and pulse width modulation method are also proposed. A prototype series active power filter is established. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method and indicate that the series active power filter has good compensation characteristics for harmonics to voltage harmonic source.
