Abstract
In order to measurably displace fossil fuels in the near term, companies looking to commercialize a biofuel technology must expect to operate at levels of scale, efficiency, and margin that are unprecedented in the biotechnology industry to date. This chapter discusses high-level technical and economic challenges that many technologies will face at industrial scale. Culture and process optimization strategies and culture oxygen demand reduction are discussed, along with basic bioreactor scale-up principles and aeration process economics. Methodologies and techniques for culture optimization are also discussed and compared, including design of experiments, response surface methodology, artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, and optimization tools.
