Abstract
The high current upgrade of the accelerator facilities at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, has created possibilities for a new class of experiments with heavy ion beams. Intense pulses of heavy ion beams can rapidly heat converters to high temperatures. The energy deposition of heavy ion beams as well as the hydrodynamic response of the converters and the radiation emitted from the converters are investigated experimentally.
