Abstract

With the in-depth understanding of biomechanics and mechanobiology mechanisms, there is a significantly increasing interest in the applications of mechanical principles to the treatment of diseases, resulting in the emerging field of mechanotherapy. Meanwhile, the combination of biomaterials and mechanotherapy provides diverse and sophisticated methods for therapeutic intervention. In this review, with the focus on recent advancements in biomaterial applications within mechanotherapy in 2022, a comprehensive summary of various multiscale mechanotherapy techniques was provided, namely, at organ and tissue, micro-tissue, cellular and sub-cellular, and molecular scales. By exploring how biomaterials can serve for mechanotherapy applications, the review aims to inspire interdisciplinary research and accelerate the translation of mechanotherapy concepts into clinical practice.
