Abstract

In micro-grid, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) caused high stress on system frequency stability, because they cannot provide enough inertia and damping to the system. Virtual synchronous machine (VSM) has been proposed which brings inverters new characteristics like synchronous machine (SM). Energy storage system (ESS) is the basic physical condition for inertia and damping. And ESS is limited by environment and investment. In order to get the physical constraint and operating boundary of VSM, this paper built the small signal model of VSM and proposed a method to get physical constraints of ESS. Operating boundary of VSM under physical constraints has been confirmed through different output reactive power types. Through the analysis of the dynamic response characteristics of the virtual synchronous machine with different inertia and damping, influences of inertia and damping on VSM operation was obtained. Finally, simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC verified the theoretical analysis.
