Relationship between the interlamellar bonding and properties of plasma-sprayed y2O3-ZrO2 coatings

Abstract

8YSZ (8molY2O3-ZrO2) coatings were deposited under different substrate surface temperature from room temperature up to 1100°C during plasma spraying. The lamellar mean bonding ratio of YSZ coatings was estimated from the ionic conductivity of YSZ coatings. The mechanical properties of YSZ coatings including microhardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness were measured through indentation approaches. It was found that the bonding ratio of YSZ coatings increases with the increase of the surface temperature. The elastic modulus of the YSZ coatings are increased by a factor over three as the surface temperature is increased from room temperature to about 1100°C. Moreover, Comparing the fracture toughness of 0.9±0.2 MPa m1/2.for YSZ coating deposited at ambient temperature, the measurement yields a mean fracture toughness of 5.1±1.1 MPa m1/2, for the YSZ deposited at a surface temperature of 1100°C, which is about 3-fold that of bulk materials. The results clearly revealed that the mechanical properties of plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings determined by the interlamellar bonding. With the significant increase of interlamellar interface bonding through controlling coating surface temperature the mechanical properties values are significantly increased.
