Abstract
The Transmission Line Modelling (TLM) method is applied to a class of electromagnetic problems which involve a strong interaction between charged particles and electromagnetic fields. This time-domain algorithm offers certain advantages for modelling the field-particle problems, however numerical errors were observed consistently in a series of numerical experiments. Without suppression, such numerical errors would grow in the form of non-physical energy generation. In this paper, the physical cause of the non-physical energy is investigated by examining the process of moving a charged particle on a TLM mesh. Based on the results of this analysis, a technique is proposed to reduce these errors.
