Abstract

Since the fault charateristics of wind power system are quite different from that of regular power grid, the protection performance of traditional distance relays under wind power integration is analyzed in this paper. The general fault characteristics of wind power system are firstly introduced. Then by substituting the fault characteristics into the derivation process of traditional distance protection relays, the protection adaptability conclusion of each distance relay to wind power integration can be drawn. Theoretical analysis shows that power frequency component distance relay and phase-comparison distance relay are influenced by the high harmonic and frequency deviation of wind power system, and power frequency variation distance relay is influenced by the impedance characteristics of wind power system. Thus the above three relays are not suitable for wind power integration system. While time-domain distance relay still remains good performance in wind power integration system. Eventually, PSCAD based simulation results demonstrate the protection adaptation conclusions.
