Abstract

With fast development of electric vehicles/hybrid electric vehicles, more attention should be paid to the security of power batteries. This study proposed a novel light-weight and shock-proof liquid cooling battery thermal management system applying silicone hose. Firstly, the influence of flow rate on cooling performance was discussed. Then, the operating strategies of the pump were investigated, and the operate-stop frequency and the ratio of operating and stop time were taken as variables. The result showed that the proposed system lowered the maximum battery temperature by about 10 °C, the maximum battery temperature under the most favorable condition was 39.99 °C. Under the setting in this study, the flow rate did not show a significant impact on cooling performance. With operate-stop frequency changed to 10 s/10 s, 1 min/1 min, 5 min/5 min, and 10 min/10 min, the maximum temperature of batteries reached 39.99 °C, 41.97 °C, 42.66 °C and 40.98 °C, respectively. Besides, with the ratio of operating and stop time taking the value of 1 min/9 min, 3 min/7 min, 5 min/5 min, and 7 min/3 min, the maximum temperature achieved 44.35 °C, 42.86 °C, 42.66 °C, and 41.57 °C, respectively. Considering the cooling performance and energy consumption comprehensively, 5 min/5 min and 10 min/10 min were suitable for operate-stop frequency, and setting the ratio of operating and stop time to 3 min/7 min was recommended.
