Abstract
The progress in halogen-free flame retardant of polycarbonate and its blends (not including aluminium-magnesium flame retardant), including silicone, aromatic sulphonates, halogen-free phosphates, phosphor-nitrogen compounds, boron compounds, polymer/inorganics nano-composites and so on, is reviewed. The flame retardant mechanisms of these systems are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages are also evaluated. It is pointed out that, research on synergism of halogen-free flame retarding elements, searching for novel flame retardants and new process technique which are of higher effect and lower cost according to different application of polycarbonate and its blends, should be the direction of our efforts in the future.
