Prediction and simulation on the shear stress and mass transfer in perfused bioreactors EL: Effect of feed mode and bioreactor geometry

Abstract

Bioreactors have been widely used in tissue engineering because of their controllability in environments and operating conditions. But bioreactor design is very complex and still at an early stage of development. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is commonly used for the design and manufacture of devices with fluid flow as a powerful computer "experiments" modelling and simulation tool. By the CFD simulations of different feed mode, different diameter, and different geometric shape, we obtained the concentration status of glucose and lactate in different times and shear stress. Through the simulation, it was shown that the direct flow to the cell culture medium should be avoided. In the same conditions such as fluid feed rate and cell culture medium rate, the small size and easily made bioreactor should be possibly selected.
