Abstract
The physical mechanism of the sympathetic interaction between two transformers caused by inrush transients and its influence on differential protection are analyzed. Theory analysis and practical cases show that the non-periodic component of inrush current caused by the energized transformer running across the system resistance results in the non-periodic fluctuation of voltage in the common node, which accounts for the sympathetic inrush on the adjacent transformer. And the partial transient saturation of the current transformer due to the slowly attenuated non-periodic component of the sympathetic inrush is the main reason for mal-operation of differential protection. Several points for attention and the relevant methods for the operation are presented.
