Abstract

To overcome the shortcomings of existing fault segment location methods that considerable communication is needed and zero-sequence voltage and current are difficult to measure, a method based on phase voltage and current fault components was proposed. It is obtained that when a single-phase earth fault occurs, there will be positive correlation coefficients between current and voltage fault component derivative of each phase of healthy lines, healthy phases of fault line and fault phase of downstream segments of the fault point respectively. On contrary, the correlation coefficients of upstream segments of fault point are negative. Therefore, the farthest segment away from the bus among the segments with negative correlation coefficient is the faulty one. If all correlation coefficients are positive, the fault occurs at the bus. Simulation on PSCAD verifies reliability of proposed method in all types of faults.
