Abstract

For its excellent mechanical properties, elliptical flexure hinges have been widely used in compliant mechanisms. Based on the theory of Euler-Bernoulli beam, the compliance, stress and accuracy models of elliptical hinge were established. To design elliptical flexure hinges of best performance, the author proposed a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) search method, where an exponentially decreasing inertia weight is deployed instead of a linearly decreasing inertia weight. Simulations indicate that the MPSO method is very effective. The optimal design parameters including the cutout configuration and the minimum thickness are obtained.
