Abstract

The influence of gradient SiC coating, prepared by carbothermic reduction reaction, on the oxidation resistance of 3-D braided carbon fibers was studied. The kinetics and reaction mechanism of oxidation reaction of gradient SiC coating/3-D braided carbon fibers (Composite fibers) in air were studied also. The results showed that the oxidation resistance of composite fibers was improved clearly compared with that of raw fibers. The oxidation process was reaction-controlled in the first oxidation step, gas diffusion and chemical reaction controlled in the second oxidation step. There was a self-catalytic characteristic in oxidation process.
