Abstract

The Magnetic Stereotaxis System (MSS) is a unique medical device designed to deliver drugs and other therapies directly into deep brain tissues to perform complicated surgical operations. According to the special requirements of MSS, this paper presents a novel type of modified quadrupole magnet. After redesign and optimum of the current density deduced from the target field approach, we have already completed the construction of this spherical quadrupole magnet that has a constant current distribution that is easy to fabricate in engineering. Compared with the traditional solenoid coils, this new type of coils can generate higher linear gradient fields while the inductance values keep lower that is more essential for the MSS. A prototype of this modified spherical quadrupole magnet has been constructed with copper conductors at laboratory. The testing work has already been completed.
