Numerical simulation of stratification caused by filling in large LNG storage tank

Abstract

Studying the phenomenon of stratification and the prevention of LNG rollover is important to realize the influence law of stratification caused by filling in large LNG storage tank. The 3D filling model of large LNG storage tank was presented, and the influences of difference filling speed, filling pipe height, filling pipe diameter, filling pipe length, filling pipe angle on stratification were studied. The result shows that the most optimal filling speed in large LNG storage tank is about 5 m/s. Furthermore, when the filling flow rate is constant, filling pipe diameter is determined by this velocity. Moreover, when the lighter fluid is filling, the most optimal filling angle is 0°, and the lower the filling pipe height, the smaller the layered. When the heavy fluid is filling, the range of the most optimal filling angle is between 45° and 60°.
