Numerical calculation of strain energy release rate and mode-mixity for interface crack tip of composites

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

For predicting delamination propagation and fatigue failure of laminated composite plate accurately, a modified virtual crack closure-integral technique (VCCT) was used for calculating strain energy release rate and mode-mixity for orthotropic interface crack problems. The modified VCCT was formulated first and then integrated into the superposition finite element method (S-FEM) to obtain the strain energy release rate (SERR) and extract the components in different modes. Finally the validity of the technique in calculating SERE and mode-mixity, and extracting SERR components was verified by using an interface crack model.
