Abstract

A novel poly(pyrrole methine), poly[(3-butyrylpyrrole-2,5-diyl)p-(N,N-dimethylamino)azobenzylidene] (PBPDMAABE) was synthesized firstly by condensation reaction of 3-butyrylpyrrole with 4-aldehyde-4'-dimethylaminoazobenzene (ADMAA). The polymer can be easily dissolved in many kinds of organic solvent. The solubility and film-forming performance of the polymer are better than that of poly [(pyrrole-2,5-diyl)p-(N,N-dimethylamino)azobenzylidene]. The chemical structure of PBPDMAABE is proved by infrared spectrum, proton magnetic resonance spectrum and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum. The optical forbidden band gap (Eg) of PBPDMAABE is about 1.82 eV. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the polymer are studied using degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) at 532 nm. The measured third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of PBPDMAABE chloroform solution and film are as large as 2.12×10-8 esu and 3.91×10-8 esu, respectively. The second hyperpolarisability value of PBPDMAABE is 2.68×10-25 esu and its nonlinear refractive index is 5.47×10-7 esu. The results indicate that the novel polymer is a promising nonlinear optical material.
