Abstract

In this paper, multi-scale Lempel-Ziv complexity algorithm was introduced to analyze brain states. The performance of the algorithm was tested using EEG data and compared to conventional complexity algorithm. The coefficient of variation of mean and variance ratio results of the calculated complexities using multi-scale Lemple-Ziv algorithm were lower than using conventional algorithm. By applying this algorithm to EEG data at quiescent state, playing poker game state and playing digital game state, we proved that the algorithm is more capable of extracting the rhythm feature in EEG signals and can distinguish the three states easily.
