Abstract

Mobile communication has been the foundation of the global communication network. Mobile phone, as one of the most important factors of mobile communication, has had a long journey from its birth to today’s 5G smartphone. Electromagnetics science is indispensable for mobile communication and mobile phones. Antennas that locate at the front end of a communication system play an important role in wireless performance. Few books have been reported to introduce mobile antennas and one of the most systematic is Antenna Design for Mobile Devices published in 2011 by Zhijun Zhang. After 2011, for one thing, the mobile phone has experienced a transition stage from feature phone to smartphone; for another, Chinese phone manufacturers developed rapidly. Driven by these two aspects, the phone market has been booming in the decade after 2011. As far as authors know, Zhang’s book is the latest one introducing mobile antennas and no book is available to introduce the mobile antennas after 2011. This chapter deals with the entire history of the mobile antenna: The period from 1983 to 2011 is briefly presented, whereas from 2011 to 2022 is described in detail.
