Abstract

In this study, a novel oscillatory pressure sintering (OPS) was explored for the preparation of Ti6Al4V alloy, and the microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of OPS-Ti6Al4V were investigated subsequently. As a comparison, the spark plasma sintering (SPS) was also utilized to fabricate Ti6Al4V alloy. It was found that OPS-Ti6Al4V had an improved ductility of 16.6 % in elongation, which was 21.2 % higher than SPS-Ti6Al4V, while its strength was slightly reduced. The improved ductility of OPS-Ti6Al4V is attributed to the transition from Widmanstätten microstructure to bi-modal microstructure under the effort of oscillatory pressure. This study suggests that OPS could provide a promising way to fabricate titanium alloys with tailored strength and ductility.
