Abstract
Structure and magnetic properties of as-cast and annealed Dy(Co1-xSix)2 samples with x=0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray analyser (EDX), optical microscopy and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results show that most of the samples consist of MgCu2-type DyCo2 and that some DyCo3 (PuNi3 structure) may be present as minority phase. The first-order transition disappeared after partial substitution of Si for Co in the Dy(Co1-xSix)2 (x>0.06) alloys. The annealed compounds have a rather large magnetic entropy change near Tc. The magnetization of the arc-melted compounds changes gradually in the vicinity of Tc which leads to relatively small magnetic entropy changes ΔSM. However, the temperature range of ΔSM is wider for these compounds and this may practically be more useful.
