Abstract

With the intense beam from The RFQ accelerator at GSI the first ion beam induced plasma has been produced. New diagnostic techniques for ion beam induced plasmas have been developed. Low density foam targets were irradiated with an intense ion beam and also with intense laser light. The experiments are carried out to investigate the properties and assets of heavy ion beams as a potential driver for inertial confinement fusion.
