Abstract
A fault current limiter with series compensation is presented for 10 kV distribution network system. It is composed of a capacitor and an inductance in series with main circuit, some metal oxide surge arresters in parallel with the capacitor, a damping loop, some anti-parallel thyristors, and a bypass switch. The topology and working principle of the fault current limiter are described, and its influence on single machine infinite system is analyzed theoretically. A simplified 10 kV distribution network model is established to investigate the influence of the fault current limiter on the power system's transient stability via MATLAB/Simulink. Theoretical and simulation results show that the fault current limiter can improve the power quality and the capacity of transmission line in normal state, and it can limit short-circuit current to improve the transient stability of the power system in the case of short circuit.
