Abstract

Through analyzing a typical harmonic source in power system, it was illustrated that the property of a rectifier with a filter inductor or capacitor on its DC side is similar to harmonic current or voltage source. On the basis of discussing the operation principles of the shunt and series active power filters, their compensation characteristics to different types of harmonic sources were investigated. It was demonstrated that the shunt or series active power filter should be used for compensating the current or voltage harmonic source, otherwise, good compensation effect can be lost.
