Abstract
Introducing heat pumps into a heat exchanger network (HEN) can enhance its energy efficiency. This chapter presents graphical analyses for the integration of HEN with heat pumps. The influences of heat pump placement on HENs are investigated using pinch technology. The changes of the grand composite curve (GCC) and pinch temperature are analyzed on seven cases, and the reasons for such changes are explored. In this light, a systematic design methodology is presented for the use of heat pumps to assist heat integration of distillation column into the overall process. A case study is presented to demonstrate this methodology.
