Frequency Trajectory Planning Based Wind Turbine and Energy Storage System Cooperative Control Strategy for Frequency Regulation

Abstract

The high proportion of wind power integration brings a decline in grid inertia, which poses a huge challenge to the frequency stability. Wind turbine system (WTS) and energy storage system (ESS) can be used to improve the frequency response of lowinertia power systems. In this paper, based on the economics of grid-connected WTS and the technical advantages of the WTS and ESS, respectively. A frequency trajectory planning (FTP) based WTS and ESS (WESS) cooperative control strategy for frequency regulation is proposed. Firstly, a frequency trajectory with a safety margin is actively planned according to the system frequency threshold, so that WESS takes the planned frequency trajectory as the control target. The WTS and the ESS are controlled with inertia and integrated control respectively to collaborate with fast power output. The proposed control strategy will ensure frequency safety while maintaining economy and achieving optimal utilization of ESS. The simulation model is established in MATLAB/Simulink to verify the effectiveness and economy of the control strategy.
